Has any one tried to map the stones that are in their original positions? Looking at the layout of some of the stones they do not seem to be a random placing. Is it possible to compare it with a map of a star map, they may not have been used as a calender but rather a reflection of the sky - like so many anciant cultures. I submit this question humbly as i am not a skilled archaeologist.

The problem is that most - 80% plus of them have been looted. So there is NO context left for mapping. In 1976 I attempted just that very thing, with very inconclusive results. Personally, I do not feel that their positioning is all that signification from an alignment point of view. In my view - and I am speculating a bit here - I feel that they made excellent marker or mile stones, marking highways through the forest.

We think the stone spheres were used as ballast by the Phoenician ships that sailed the western coast of the Americas.
